Glossary of Tyre Terms
Aspect Ratio
Is the ratio of the height of the tyre's cross-section to its width. 65 means that the height is equal to 65% of the tyre's width.
Bead
This is that part of the tyre that contacts the rim on the wheel and it fits close to the two rims on the wheel to ensure that a tubeless tire holds air.
Kevlar
Is the registered trademark for a synthetic fibre developed in 1965.
Load Index
Is a number that corresponds to the maximum load in kilograms that a tyre can support when properly inflated. You will also find the maximum load in pounds and in kilograms moulded elsewhere on the tyre sidewall.
Pneumatic Tires
Are comprised of a flexible material (such as rubber) with reinforcing materials such as wire.
Sidewall
Is the bridge between the tread and bead.
Silica
Is a chemical compound also known as silicon dioxide and is added to the rubber in tyres.
Tread
The raised rubber on the surface of the tyre which makes contact with the road.
Tyre Type
Defines the proper use of the tyre. “P” means this is a Passenger car tyre. If the tyre had an “LT” then the tyre would be for a Light Truck.
Tyre Width
This Is the width of the tyre measured in millimetres from sidewall to sidewall.
Wheel Diameter
Is the width of the wheel from one end to the other.
