How to fit tyres to your car
Thinking about how to change a flat tyre? Or maybe the tread on your tyres is low?
Generally speaking, you may be able to fit a tyre yourself if you have a tyre iron, a car jack, jack stands, a tyre spreader, and a tyre inflator. However, if you do not fit the tyre correctly, you risk vehicle damage and serious personal injury. That’s why it’s important to have your tyres fitted or changed by a qualified mechanic or technician.

Tyre maintenance
Our customers often ask us for tyre care and maintenance tips, and for good reason. Taking good care of your tyres can increase their longevity and performance. Here’s some easy things you can do to maintain the health and life of your tyres:
- Maintain tyre inflation - keeping your tyre pressure at the recommended level will prolong the life of your tyres. Most tyre damage occurs when tyres are not properly inflated resulting in cracking and flexing of the tyre.
- Service your tyres regularly - servicing your tyres regularly will ensure you get maximum life and performance. Beaurepaires recommends a wheel alignment and a rotate and balance every 6 months or 10000kms. We offer free rotation and balance and discounted wheel alignments when you purchase tyres with us.
- Check your tyres for wear - Many road accidents occur when tyres have become ‘bald’. Bald or nearly bald tyres are when the tread has reached 1.6mm remaining in depth. Worn tyres are also more likely to suffer punctures.
- Don’t spin your tyres - if your car is stuck in snow, ice, mud or sand, or if you are driving in wet conditions, do not excessively spin your tyres. Spinning your tyres may cause them to overheat and result in damage.
- Don’t overload your car - check the manual of your car to determine the load limit. Overloading your car can place excessive stress on the tyres and result in damage.
When should you change your tyres?
The main indicator that it’s time to replace your tyres is tread depth. For your vehicle to be considered roadworthy in Australia, your tyre’s tread depth must be at least 1.6mm deep.
Older tyres should also be replaced. As tyres age, they’re more susceptible to punctures, cracks and other damage, which could make your vehicle unsafe. Tyres should be replaced immediately if they are more than 10 years old.
It’s best to replace your tyres in sets, even if a particular tyre appears to be in better or worse condition than others. Replacing your tyres together ensures there is no uneven wear and increases the performance and feel of your drive.

When fitting just two tyres
Most leading global tyre manufacturers recommend for the safety of yourself and passengers that you change all four of your tyres at the same time.
If for some reason this is not possible and are forced to replace two tyres, manufacturers recommend you install them on the rear axle of the vehicle – regardless of whether the vehicle is front or rear wheel drive.
New tyres impact the handling of your vehicle. When the rear of your vehicle is fitted with worn tyres you may oversteer - which is dangerous especially in wet conditions. For almost all drivers, oversteer is nearly impossible to correct and can be fatal.
It is also not recommended to replace a single tyre or mix tread patterns on the same axle.
