How do I choose tyres for my vehicle?

When it comes to choosing tyres, there’s certainly no one-size-fits-all approach. Each tyre has specific characteristics that determine the tyre’s performance, traction, longevity, fuel efficiency, handling and noise.

To determine which tyres are best for your vehicle, you should refer to your owner’s manual. In the manual, you’ll find your tyre’s size, speed rating and load rating. This will ensure you make an appropriate choice when shopping for new tyres.

When choosing what tyres you should buy for your car, you should pay attention to these characteristics as they’ll affect the safety, performance and longevity of your tyres.

What is OE (original equipment)?

Using original equipment is when you fit your vehicle with the same brand and model of tyre that came with the car.

Your car was designed with a certain type of tyre (and the characteristics of that tyre) in mind. Therefore when it comes to buying new tyres, it's important that you either replace your tyres with original equipment or an alternative with the same characteristics. Which brand of tyre is best?

Your car’s tyres are the only part of the car that makes contact with the road, meaning the quality of your tyres has a direct impact on the safety of your vehicle.

It’s tempting to buy from less well-known brands, or be enticed by a bargain when shopping for tyres. But it’s important to be aware of the risks you’re taking.

For the safety of you and your passengers, it’s a no-brainer to go with a trusted brand with a reputation for manufacturing high-quality, safe tyres.

Beaurepaires stocks a wide range of the top tyre brands from around the world, including Goodyear, Dunlop, Pirelli, Continental and Roadstone tyres. Buying from these trusted brands gives the peace of mind you need, while delivering fantastic performance.

How many tyres do you need?

It’s best to replace your tyres in sets, even if a particular tyre appears to be in better or worse condition than others. Replacing your tyres together ensures there is no uneven wear and increases the performance and feel of your drive.

If unsure about whether you need to replace two, or all four of your tyres you should consult your Beaurepaires technician.

What about my spare tyre?

Most vehicles will have a full-size spare tyre, or a space saver.

A full-size spare is a good backup when faced with longer commutes or car trips. Although you lose some boot space, a full-size spare ensures you can continue to drive without compromising handling, acceleration or braking.

Some vehicles will include a space saver, which is generally half the width of a regular tyre. It’s good for saving boot space and generally found in smaller or performance vehicles. This tyre does have some limitations, however, including reduced handling and a limited top speed of 80km/h.
